About Pewaukee, Wisconsin
Pewaukee, Wisconsin is a city in Waukesha County, and borders the western Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield. The city was incorporated from what was formerly the Town of Pewaukee. The Village of Pewaukee, which was incorporated out of the town before it incorporated as a city, is surrounded by the city. The name of these communities comes from "Pee-wauk-ee-wee-nick," meaning "lake of shells" in Potawatomi - an observation owing to the great quantity of small shells found in the sand along the shore. The city's population was 11,783 at the 2000 census.
Part of an active and growing Waukesha-area settlement in the late 1830s, Pewaukee was set off and organized as a separate town by an act of the Territorial Legislative on January 13,1840. The first recorded town meeting or election was held at the house of E.P. Maynard, April 8,1842. In 1843, there were 130 school children, with a school fund of $150, and 100 resident taxpayers in the town with property assessed at $1,461.50. By that time, the Town of Pewaukee had become a strategic midway stopping point between Milwaukee and Watertown on Olde Plank Road and the community prospered from its continual traffic and the trade that came with it, leading to Pewaukee's incorporation as a city in
In the early 1900s the son of Asa Clark, Pewaukee’s first white settler, built the Clark House, which remained in the possession of the Clark family until the death of Marietta Clark Larson, Asa's great granddaughter in 1984. In 1992 the Pewaukee Area Historical Society purchased the property and the Clarke House Museum today is open to the public as a window into Pewaukee's rich past.
Today, Pewaukee is a charming community that makes a big splash with visitors and citizens lucky enough to call it home. Located just off I-94 and west of Milwaukee, this vital community has been successful in preserving the small-town feel and tranquility of the area, while encouraging growth and attracting new businesses.
Every night in the summer, residents and their guests dip into Pewaukee Lake - the heart of Pewaukee - for a wide variety of water sports, such as sailing, fishing, swimming and water skiing. Even if your definition of water-related activity is sipping cold drinks dockside or gazing at the lake while dining in one of Pewaukee's fine or casual restaurants, you can't help but have a good time on the lake. Other local activities, most available year-round, include the Pewaukee Lakefront Beach, the Country Springs Indoor Water Park, the annual TDS Metrocom Triathlon, weekly water ski shows and nightly lakefront concerts, the popular A Taste of Lake Country, the Halloween Fun Fest (at the Clark House), Pewaukee's Fire & Ice and Holiday Festivals - and so much more.
